Anemia Correction

Unlike the general population, CKD patients are more likely to have anemia, which is also associated with an increased risk for stroke. Anemia in CKD is often treated with erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESAs). Correction of anemia with ESAs to levels of hemoglobin >12.5 g/dL is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events, including stroke. It is postulated that increases in blood pressure associated with ESA therapy, greater blood viscosity, relative thrombocytosis, and decreased bleeding tendency associated with greater hemoglobin levels result in the increased incidence of stroke.
